PDC 111: If I'm Teaching, Why Aren't They Learning?! How to Provide
World Class Training that Works! Sat., May 22, 2010 at AIHce in Denver,
CO. Early Bird rate ends March 10, 2010 - register now!
http://www.aihce2010.org/aihce10/education/course.aspx?id=524
Does someone in-house provide one-time or on-going employee training? Do
employees dread mandatory training sessions because they’re boring; the
same old info delivered in the same old way year after year?
Here’s an affordable opportunity for new and well experienced trainers
alike to learn some new techniques for delivering information in a fun,
engaging way that will help employees remember the material and maybe
even make them look forward to the sessions each year!
Many trainers become frustrated when trainees don’t seem to learn or
otherwise “benefit” from the training. In this very different workshop,
the students will participate in the learning process throughout the
day. The workshop is designed to both educate as well as involve the
students in the process of improving their training skills.
Methods and approaches to be used include demonstration, hands-on, small
group work, role-playing, games, discussion, question/answer,
brainstorming, and brief video clips. This workshop will give students
the skills to improve their training.
Come prepared to learn, educate, participate, and have more fun than
you’re used to having at a workshop or seminar!
Your registration fee includes morning and afternoon refreshment breaks
and an information filled packet (or electronic handouts) that will include:
• Handouts for all of the workshop modules, plus;
• Several articles written by Jonathan;
• Lists of training resources;
• List of 135 Training Tips & Tricks (what works);
• Training from Hell (what does not work);
• Jonathan’s “Guiding Principles” of training;
• Examples of training challenges.
Here’s a list of some tentative topics that we can cover. Which ones and
the level of detail will depend on the attendees.
1. Needs assessments – How to determine if training is needed and if so,
what types.
2. Learning objectives – These are the ubiquitous “At the end of the
class, students will be able to:” followed by several bullets starting
with action verbs (e.g., “List 5 each training dos and don’ts”). They
are what the student should be able to do.
3. Lesson plan development – How to create your “road map” (GPS perhaps
these days?) for your training.
4. Training sequence/cycle – What is the right order for training pieces
(test, objectives, evaluations, etc.)?
5. Ice breakers – These are either the getting to know the students or
the starting out with a fun thing (like a funny video, joke, or humorous
story).
6. Room set-up – Tables, chairs, A/V, etc.
7. Food and drinks and training – Coffee, donuts, healthy snacks,
lunches, etc.
8. Handouts – Appropriate scope and format – trying to reduce (and be green)
9. Breaks – How often, how long, how to get them back on time
10. Time and timing – When to hold classes, how long, etc.
11. PowerPoint – dos and don’ts, most common complaints
12. Student learning styles – visual, auditory, tactile
13. Learning domains – cognitive, affective, psychometric/kinesthetic
14. Keeping students engaged/participating – How to gain and maintain
student involvement
15. Best and worst training methods – what works for best retention and
what doesn’t
16. Is training always the “solution”? – What else besides training
might be behind work issues?
17. Students at different levels – You have Ph.D. researchers,
supervisors, workers, administrative assistants, maintenance, and
custodians in the same class.
18. Tests and testing – Are they effective measures of learning? What is
a better measure of the training?
19. Evaluations – Formative (during the class), summative (at the end of
the class), forms, peer review, audits, video – what works, what doesn’t.
20. Trainer professional development – Courses, experience, degrees,
certifications, etc.
21. Trainer burnout – What to do when you really don’t want to do the
training
22. Language – They speak another language (and you don’t)
23. Literacy – They are not functionally literate (either in English or
perhaps their language if non-English speakers)
24. Culturally Appropriate Training (CAT) – Persons of different
cultures have widely different norms – how to design and deliver
training that will be well received
25. Training tips and tricks – How to spice up training – effective methods
26. Annual refresher training – How to do the same thing year after and
year and make it interesting and training they look forward to
27. Adult learner likes and dislikes – What are the things that most
adult learners want and not want
28. Trainer dos and don’ts – What should you do and what not to do
29. Flexibility in topics – How to bend over backwards to accommodate
learner questions and requests without getting your agenda “hijacked”
30. “Problem” students – Challenging trainees – lots of different
situations here
31. Classroom problems – All sorts of stuff – no lights, no A/V, no
handouts, etc.
32. Facilitating discussions – How to manage discussions
33. Adult learning principles – What are the common methods and
approaches that work
34. Training games – All sorts of games to make training more fun and
engaging
35. Others you can think of and want to discuss?
